Overview

The main objectives of the Course’s Master's Program are to develop personnel in the following areas.

(1) Researchers who can conduct creative research in the two specializations of Chinese Language and Chinese History and Culture.

(2) Specialists with advanced expert knowledge, research capabilities, and foreign language capabilities required for the knowledge-based society of the future.

The main objectives of the Course’s Doctoral Program are to develop personnel in the following areas.

(1) Researchers who belong to universities, research institutes, and other educational or research institutions in Japan and abroad.

(2) Personnel who are able to engage in duties in general companies, journalism, work in administrative institutions, etc., utilizing advanced expert knowledge and research capabilities.

Curriculum features

In addition to research in the domain of lexicology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics related to Chinese language, this course also examines the mechanisms of the Chinese language from the perspectives of sociolinguistics, contrastive linguistics, discourse linguistics, cognitive linguistics, theoretical linguistics, and other areas.

Chinese History and Culture

This course focuses on research in the fields of history, social sciences, philosophy, literature, folklore literature, and visual arts in Chinese-speaking countries. In particular, our research has been highly regarded both inside and outside of Japan, especially in the fields of modern Shanghai history, history of China-Japan relations, cultural comparison between China and Japan, history of Chinese novels, contemporary history of Hong Kong, and Chinese documentary films.

Common subjects

Academic writing is offered as a common subject to develop the ability to write academic articles.
